Critical Care Unit at Maury Regional Medical Center
Location: Columbia, TN
Services: Architecture, Engineering, Interior Design and Planning
Maury Regional Medical Center, a Planetree certified healthcare facility, expanded and upgraded their facilities with a new fifth-floor Critical Care Unit (CCU) designed by HFR. The fifth-floor of an existing patient tower was reconstructed to be dedicated to the care of critically ill patients. This project involved combining units on the first and second floors of the patient towers, and ultimately resulted in increasing the number of critical care rooms from 24 to 26. HFR worked closely with staff and physicians to continue Planetree design elements in the new department, including maximizing natural light and promoting a healing environment for patients and their families.
During the planning phase of the project the idea to include a feature wall, which upon entering the unit would set the tone for the environment of the floor. The Critical Care Serenity Wall greets entrants to the CCU, providing a peaceful setting for patients, family members and staff. The images on the wall display change and some provide soothing outdoor sounds.
By focusing on function during the planning and programming phases, enhanced features were implemented in the final design that maximizes efficiency. These features include centralized ceiling arm power, patient lifts in every room, larger rooms that provide an alcove sleeper sofa for visitors and a private bathroom for the patient, a family/friends common area that includes a sleeping room, large kitchenette, shower facilities and a private family consultation room.
This project was the 2017 Planetree Person-Centered Care Innovation Award winner.
