Athens High School Athletic Facilities
Scope: Athletic Fields and Facilities
Location: Athens, AL
Services: Architecture, Engineering
HFR turned a Master Plan into reality by designing and performing construction administration for the athletic facilities at Athens High School. A total of five new buildings were designed to bring their facility into the 21st century. A gated entry way with ticket booths for baseball and softball welcomes fans to the complex. Beyond the gates are independent concessions buildings and press boxes for the baseball and softball fields. Located to the side of the baseball field is the 6,200 SF locker room building that accommodates the baseball and softball teams as well as both soccer teams. Coaches offices, training rooms and storage rooms were also included within the building. A restroom building was located between the spring sports complex and the football facility.
After approval of a Master Plan study, HFR designed new athletic facilities for the Athens High School. A new baseball field and softball field were the primary focus along with the support buildings. The fields included split-face block dugouts with a storage room for turf maintenance equipment along with a matching backstop wall. Above the backstop wall netting was used to help improve spectator viewing. Laser grading was specified to give the Tiffway 419 Bermuda sod a consistent grade. The design also included irrigation and lighting for the fields. The adjacent soccer field was adapted for night play with the addition of sports lighting as well. HFR provided construction administration of the project to ensure the fields were constructed in accordance to the plans and meet the expectations of Athens High School.
