Engineering is one of the oldest professions in the world. The first documented engineer was Imhotep, builder of the Step Pyramid of King Zoser at Saqqarah, Egypt, around 2550 BC. With simple tools and mathematics he created a monument that stands to this day. His discovery of the art of building with shaped stones, was his greatest contribution to engineering. His successors – Egyptian, Persian, Greek, and Roman – carried engineering to remarkable heights using solid understanding of geometry, arithmetic, and a little understanding of physical science.

Although engineering technology has greatly evolved, the same basic principles used by Imhotep still apply today.
